Torsion Spring Free Angle

Torsion Spring Design Resources – Methods of Free Angle Measurement for Torsion Springs

The free angle of a torsion spring is the angular difference between the two legs that protrude from the coil body when the spring is not loaded. Measuring the free angle can be done by using tools as simple as a protractor or as advanced as an optical comparator.

Spring Index (D/d) and the number of active coils in the spring affect the free angle tolerance and should be considered during the design stage. It is always best to work with your spring makers during the early stage in order to achieve the ultimate design
